These were my series of designs promoting the UHST and the show that we were involved in. Unfortunately The project was thwarted by a number of changes which distorted the final outcome would be, for example these ideas were never printed for the promotion of the charity event as there was not enough funding, and a lack of communication between the parties involved. I think if from the start we knew what we were dealing with in terms of finance and what were the realistic outcomes, instead of being filled with wondrous ideas of 20ft walls filled with our work or T-Shirts, bags and posters would be available to the guests. We started with gusto and fizzled out. This is not a generalisation; the evening’s main attraction was a fascinating fashion show with music and great photography all inspired by African culture raising over £1000 to help the UHST, we pulled it off!!

I would like to talk about the designs briefly, how they were conceived and what they represented. (Starting from the top and working down) Quite simply I wanted to create a very bold poster made giving the impression that it was made from raw materials. The type is from an alphabet I created from apples, this I considered to be a great look to lettering that gives a rustic handmade look. You are able to see the apples in their original form, third image down. David Carson inspires the crosses within the work, it also has a symbolism towards Christianity, and approximately 80-85% of the population follows the Christian faith. I wanted to bring in a graphic element to the design, something that brings it towards the digital side of the world. The location, day and date were created to give a more informative look, to give the audience a focal point. The final image was given a filter to give the design a stitched effect. Again to give the feel of being handmade, throughout the set the date, day and time are presented in a similar way, varying the colours to coincide with the backgrounds.

Screen Printing Ideas for Bag

Looking at designs for bags I believe the best way to print onto them would be screen printing with a simple one or two colour design, it is cost effective as we can perform the task using the college's resources.

I also like the idea of creating a design that interacts with the bag and with the person holding it. You can see from the examples I have given the ideas of which I am speaking of, to the left you can see what looks like a lady using the bag handle to skip with. I want to make the experience of the exhibition enjoyable from Start through to the Finish. These bags will be a good start as they will either be given to the people who have attended the exhibition or they will be sold to raise money for the UHST.

A few new Ideas

Just a few more ideas I have designed. Here I have used apples cut into letter forms giving the feel of something very natural and in my opinion, within keeping of the nature of the project.

Info Graphs Rule!

Hello,
We are still in the early stages of development process for the big show, but we have made a few small steps towards what we all have in mind.
Here is a few ideas the class came up with in our last meeting;

  • Sequential poster campaign, so a group of posters showing different people but with a main theme interlinking them.
  • (One of my favorites) Info Graphics, we use images mixed with graphics to give our audience an idea of the statistics that contribute to these children needing the help of the UHST.
  • Titles were suggested, 'Aid The Orphans'. A tag-line, 'Our Parents Are Looking After Us, But Who Is Looking After Them'
  • Tag Clouds, info graphs again but certain images or information stands out from the rest.
  • Guilt people into supporting the charity.
  • Money and how it affects children's lives
Kiwango

Kiwango or Sons of Stolen was a very interesting site for our class to draw inspiration from, as it gave us an insight into how graphics work well within an awareness campaign.

Another great site;
Information is Beautiful.

More Inspiration this week!!!

Another week, another chance to find more interesting bits and bobs for the Uganda Project. I went on the hunt to find other sites that raise awareness for charities or good causes around the world, Flyer Design Goodness and The Haiti Poster Project are two I thought were interesting for this project, from a design perspective and out of interest on how they raised awareness for Haiti. The poster project was set up after the 2010 earthquake that caused devastation in Haiti, Designers from around the world donated prints to be sold to support the charity Doctors Without Borders. THis was all in aid to raise awareness and money to help Haiti to recover from it's natural disaster.

So... We have been looking for inspiration for poster designs and also ideas concerning how we might promote the charity event for the UHST. Here are just a few ideas of design I have found on the Internet concerning interesting posters/ advertising

I like the idea of using flat colour for an African cause as it reflects African art and design. The Haiti example is a perfect example of a design that is eye catching and very simple and to the point but with a very soft and light feeling to it. The hand generated imagery also appeals to me as we are dealing with schools and I like the idea of representing them in this way.
With the second advertising example I like the idea of having the children holding the board up and stating their appeal. It is provocative with what is being said which is not really what we will essentially be looking for, but again the simplicity of the idea and imagery really appeals to me as we can write anything we want to portray within the card space.
With the last example the idea of people taking to the streets and making a statement strongly appeals to me. Here we can see how World Aids Day tries to appeal to a world audience in Denmark. I think it is a brilliant idea to provoke people into asking questions of themselves and of what is not just happening in front of their eyes, but what is happening all around the world. I think a togetherness is formed by this campaign.

Uganda Humanist Schools Trust Introduction

There are an estimated 1.2 million people living with HIV in Uganda, which includes 150,000 children. An estimated 64,000 people died from AIDS in 2009 and 1.2 million children have been orphaned by Uganda’s devastating epidemic.
AIDS has had a devastating impact on Uganda. It has killed approximately one million people, and significantly lowered life expectancy.AIDS has reduced the country’s labour force, reduced agricultural output and food security, and weakened educational and health services. The large number of AIDS related deaths amongst young adults has left behind over a million orphaned children

People living with HIV and AIDS in Uganda not only face difficulties related to treatment and management of the disease, but they also have to deal with AIDS related stigma and discrimination towards those affected by AIDS are visible at all levels of society from families and local communities to the government. President Museveni himself supported the policy of dismissing or not promoting members of the armed forces who test HIV positive, and in 2001 he suggested that a rival presidential candidate was unsuitable for office because he was allegedly infected with the virus. Discrimination has also been reported in the private sector, including mandatory HIV testing for new employees. As well as hurting those affected, such attitudes are a major hindrance to prevention and treatment efforts.

Uganda Humanist Schools Trust

We have been asked to help raise money for the charity Uganda Humanist Schools Trust (UHST). Our class has been tasked with the advertising for the campaign. We will be working in conjunction with other areas of the college including the Photography and Fashion courses. They maybe added involvement from one of the colleges dance courses.
As you can tell we are all very excited to be apart of the effort to raise awareness for children less privileged than ourselves.
Here you can find information of the The Uganda Humanist Schools Association and who is involved. They are the consultative and advisory body for humanist schools charities in Uganda.
